Hardware Requirements
IBM-compatible computer, minimum configuration: Pentium 200, RAM - 128 Mb; best configuration: Pentium 1200 and higher, RAM - 256 Mb, modem and Internet connection (for regular program update). Free disk space – approx. 70 MB. Full sound effects reproduction requires a sound card, but the latter is not compulsory for program operation.
Software Requirements
Operating system: Windows 95/98/Me/2000/NT/XP/Vista (except for 64-bit versions). For best program operation display performance should correspond to High Color or True Color (16 bits or 32 bits), resolution no less than 800 х 600.
Data collection and processing is entirely performed by the program, while various service functions require additional software. This should not be a problem since the required software is installed on most computers with Windows OS, and, if needed, it can easily be installed on your PC.
Additional software you may require is the following:
For working with forms, stimulus material and other additional options –Word 97 (7.0) or higher.
For data export –Excel 97 or higher.
For data transfer and receiving additional processing results – an e-mail program similar to Outlook Express.
For data export, review of the illustrated texts of Conclusion, Development Program and Development Dynamics diagram and for their printout or saving as a separate file – a standard Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, or another browser with similar capacities.
Protection against Unauthorized Distribution
The software designed for psychological research requires additional means of protection that provide maximum defense against free distribution of software and its use by non-experts. Although it is not possible to guarantee absolute protection, steps were taken to provide maximum compliance of the program with the requirements to distribution of psycho-diagnostic methods.
Protection means are also targeted at securing regular update of the Expert System; while each new version contains additional functions and gives more precise and full-depth results, taking into account current changes in the population.
Each new version of the program is designed to be operating for half a year with subsequent update with a new version. If a license is obtained for a period of over six months, it is required to update the program at least once every six months. For registered users update via e-mail is free. If it necessary to record the update on a physical medium and send it by mail, the medium and mailing costs are paid by the user. All contact data of the Developer can be found in the start menu as a composed e-mail message or a web-link to the program site.
Selecting Protection Means
In order to prevent program distribution and its use by non-experts, and to serve the interests of legitimate license owners when rendering commercial services, the program has two options of protection against unauthorized distribution.
1. Protection by installation code (binding to the user’s computer). This variant is mainly for temporary licenses and is optional for other types of licenses. During the first run the program (except for “Client” version) generates a number – number of the computer (No РС) and sends a request for a corresponding installation code. The user contacts the Developers by e-mail, forwards a No PC and receives an installation code. In the case of significant changes in the features of a computer or an operation system, a request for a reentry of the new installation code may also be required. If needed, the Vendor shall transfer installation code for given No PC on a request from the registered user. If there are problems with e-mail connection, you can request an installation code by phone (906) 244-06-94. You can also use this number to send a text message for installation code request, though in this case you need to give license number and owner’s name. We recommend that phone calls and text messages should be made between 12.00 and 18.00 Moscow time.
2. Protection by electronic key (to a USB port of a computer). In this case you do not need to contact the Vendor to install the program. Electronic key is a small device that is inserted into a USB port of a computer (usually it is located on the back panel). It is possible to install the program on several computers, but it will run only on the computer which for that moment will have electronic key installed.
A comparative table may be consulted in order to choose protection device.
When working with the program you may switch to another means of protection if required (you will either need to purchase a key, or, alternatively, to hand back earlier purchased key with partial cost reimbursement adjusted for wear).

Protection by installation code |
Protection by electronic key |
| - it is necessary to contact the Developers by e-mail, fax or telephone to transfer No PC and receive an installation code | + there is no need to contact the Developers in order to obtain installation code, there is a possibility for quick (re)installation and start of a program |
| + installation via internet is possible immediately after the payment is accepted | - in case of purchase by mail it may take several weeks (delivery time) from payment date to installation and actual use |
| + for a registered user loss of disk, program or computer does not mean loss of license; a free recovery can be obtained via internet | - loss of electronic key means loss of license (in this case there is a discount price for additional license and key) |
| + software can be provided for temporary use for education and demonstration purposes, also via internet | - increases the cost of the program; there is no possibility for free use for testing purposes (due to the cost of keys) |
Program Installation
1. To install the program you will need a general installation file for all versions of Longitude-EDS software.
The file name will look as follows: Longitude-EDS_Y.M.D_Setup.exe, where Y.M.D – is the name of the version (year, month and day of issue). File of this type allows installing all or selected modules of the software system.
You can download this file from program websites (www.lnd.pu.ru или www.eds.pu.ru) or launch it from a distribution disk.
When installation is started follow offered instructions on viewing the license and selecting installation directory.
When selecting installation directory you will be offered a default directory or a directory where the program was installed before (to update an earlier installed program you need to install the program into the same directory).
When selecting components for installation you can chose the configuration, for which you have a license (permission to use software). For example, you can choose Longitude B, Longitude+ or EDS+.
After installation is completed, a group of Longitude-EDS icons will be formed in Windows start menu: Start – Programs. At the first run the program on default is running in demo mode of extended version Longitude+. This mode allows learning main functions of the program and you can switch to operation mode when the license is obtained.
Second phase – switching to operation mode – depends on protection option of your program copy according
to the terms of license – (2a) by installation code or (2b) by electronic key
When the program is run in demo mode, press F5 at splash screen to call a program version panel. In this panel select the version and the defense option that you are going to use for the operation mode of the program. After you click “Install selected version as current version” the program will run in the mode selected.
2а. IF the program package DOES NOT include electronic key, choose protection by INSTALLATION CODE. In this case when you restart the program there appears a request to confirm the license and a question whether you have an installation code.
To generate an e-mail automatically press No and send a pre-composed mail with your e-mail address. In this way you will transmit your No PC to the developers and receive a corresponding installation code. If you have problems with e-mail connection, you can request an installation code by telephone: (906) 244-06-94.
You can also use this number to send a text message for installation code request, though in this case you will need to give license number and owner’s name. We recommend that phone calls and text messages should be made between 12.00 and 18.00 Moscow time.
When you receive a reply with installation code, launch the program, say Yes to the question on installation code and insert the code in the corresponding box.
2b. IF the program package INCLUDES electronic key, choose protection by ELECTRONIC KEY. In this case when you restart the program it will offer FIRST to install the drivers for the key, and THEN to insert the key into the USB port of the computer. You will not need an installation code.
Attention: USB-key should only be inserted AFTER the drivers are installed, otherwise Windows will start searching for drivers automatically. If this occurred, you should stop the search done by Windows Wizard by pressing [Cancel] and disconnect USB-key from the computer. After that you can start installing the drivers according to the instruction.
3. Before switching to operation mode you will need to insert license number (for a temporary student license – number 1) and the name of license owner (that will be shown in data processing results). In future this data can be altered by pressing F6 at splash screen.
Note.
In any case if you make a mistake when choosing installation components or when changing a version, it can be corrected by reinstalling the program (into the same directory) or by reopening program version panel (at splash screen).
Installation and operation in the conditions of Windows Vista security constraints
Strict protection constraints for drivers installation and/or for data files operation may be installed on default (as in Windows Vista) or intentionally, e.g. by computer class administrator. In this case there may appear minor problems which can be solved with Windows settings or protection means used by administrator.
In particular, Windows Vista on default has security configuration that blocks performing a lot of usual tasks, from driver installation to data recording. In order to secure normal functioning of the program it is sufficient to make it function in the name of administrator.
To do that you need to enter Windows under the user name of administrator, right click the program icon and choose the Properties option.
In Windows Vista – select the Compatibility tab from the window that appears. At the bottom of the window, under privilege level, check the box to run this program as administrator. Additionally you may also click “Settings for all users” and there select the same privilege level for the program (also check Settings for all users). Thus the program will also run when Windows is opened under the name of another user.
In Windows XP – tab shortcut, select more and launch under other user name (under the name of another user). Name and password of another user – administrator – in this case will be requested once at program launch by this shortcut.
Note. There is another option of solving this problem – to disable user account control. To do that, open control panel. From the control panel, click user accounts. Click the option to turn user account control on or off. Uncheck the box next to use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and click OK. In this case control will be disabled and the program will only run under the username it was installed with.
Update
Install a new version over the old one to the same directory (replacing old files with new ones). All stored data will be saved. Re-entering installation code or electronic key driver is not required.
To update the program you can also use a special update package (a more convenient option for on-line downloading). First, please make sure that your program version is in the range of versions to be updated with the package.
Note. As the new versions are developed, there may appear changes in program interface due to introduction of additional functions or improvements.
Deleting the program
Use a built-in uninstaller (“Delete Longitude-EDS” option in Windows start menu) or simply delete program directory (in this case all the data will also be deleted).
Organizing data collection into shared database using local network (for system administrators and advanced users)
The software system can be used for collecting data from several computers into a common database. This provides any respondent with a possibility to continue working with their data on any computer and facilitates subsequent group data analysis and data export.
Note. It is possible to run the whole program via network, but in this case due to group access to large graphic and text files (stimulus materials) there may be a slow-down of operation. Therefore when working in a network it is recommended to use a common database, and to install a program on each computer connected. For synchronous program update on all computers in the class it is possible to use any program directory synchronizer (subdirectory D, containing local database and program settings, is not required to be synchronized).
To organize networking with a common database it is required:
1. To choose a computer that will have a common database installed (usually a teacher’s PC or a server).
2. Open network access to data directory on that computer. To do that find program directory (on default it is C:\ProgramFiles\Spbu-psy.sw\d\0001), in properties give network name of this resource (e.g. d0001) and access capability (unlimited number or rather large number) of users connected by network. Access mode is full mode (reading and writing) for this directory and all subdirectories. If these settings are unavailable you need to activate access to them in general Windows settings. Open Control panel – Folder properties – View – uncheck Use simple file sharing.
3. On each computer name the path to this database as to the main one.
For that when launching the program at splash screen activate database operation mode – in the right-hand part of the keyboard (digit keys) subsequently press [+] [-] [Enter] (this mode does not function in demo-version, it should first be transferred to any operating mode).
An additional window will open, containing database list. In this window click Add which opens Editor for database catalog with full network path in the format \\srv\d0001 (where srv - network name of the computer with the database, and data – data directory name). Click OK and then you can edit database name and network name of this particular local PC (each computer connected to a network database should have a different name).
After you click OK, if the path was correct and is accessible, a list of respondents from the database (which becomes current database for the program) will be shown in the main program panel. A recent working database will become current database with a new program launch. Please note that it should be accessible for normal program operation on a local computer. The name of Current database will be shown during loading time in the upper part of program window, so that one can switch to working with databases and make another database current when needed.
Close the program to exit database editing mode. In future you can edit path and name for the database, as well as network name of the PC in database operation mode (in the proper window highlight database name and click Name and path).
4. On the computer with a database installed launch the program and create a list of respondents (preferably with alphabetical classification). This requires adding the respondents one-by-one into the general list or into required groups. On other computers this list will be available for editing, as well as personal data and group data.
To avoid conflicts when working with shared database, changes in lists of respondents can be made only on the PC where database is local, or on the one where database operation mode is on. However it is recommended to prepare respondent lists and group lists before group work is started and not to introduce any changes to this summarized data while other users are working with it.
If personal data of a respondent has a code (in the lower part of the panel), it will serve as a password for working with this data it in a network (using any method). This code can be seen or changed in personal data panel (if the program is launched on a PC with a database installed or with a database operation mode on). This code is NOT any kind of information protection device, but only an additional preventive tool against incidental access to personal data “through idle curiosity”. If required it is recommended to apply special protection devices for directories and/or codes to indicate respondents instead of using their full names.
ATTENTION! Simultaneous work on several computers with lists or personal data from the same database can lead to data damage or replacement. If this happened (e.g. if database operation mode was activated on several PCs at the same time) it is required to reindex database (launch file re-index.exe in program subdirectory \AF\) and check the correspondence of personal data and data in lists of the respondents who were working with the data during or after data damage.
Note. The same database connection interface can be used when working with several databases on one computer, or for working with the database placed on external USB-disc. In this case after giving the path to preexisting disc directory the program will display a message informing about the absence of the database and will offer to create one. Further on this database can be used as network database or main database, or switch between them as required.
